Jim gave Esmerelda a look that clearly stated he didn't understand at all what the point of this was. All the same, he pointed to the card in the dead center of the deck. "Ok, I'll play along. I choose that one."

"Okay," Esmeralda took the two cards, shuffling them casually. Jim clearly didn't understand Earth magic, even if it was lame compared to the magic. So here was his first look at how it was done. The two cards chosen were shuffled; little did the spectators know Esmeralda was keeping them close to the top on purpose. After a while, she stopped. "Now, your cards are at the bottom of the deck." She snapped her fingers. After doing so, she revealed the top two; they were the drawn cards. "And, that, is an example of a parlor trick. It's nothing compared to your flame show."

Kayley watched excitedly. She always like magic tricks, whether they were real or not. It was just that fascination she had always had with things that were magical or supernatural. She grinned when one of the cards on top of the pile turned out to be one of hers. "Whoa, that's so cool," she gushed. "Keep it up and people here might think you're a witch for real," she said, laughing.

Jim watched in silence as Esmerelda performed her trick with the cards. He didn't say anything as she pulled out his card but just watched her. However, at Kayley's comment about her fooling others into believing she was a witch, Jim couldn't help but let out a round of laughter. He couldn't stop himself from laughing at the idea. "Sorry to say, she won't fool anyone into thinking she's a witch. Not with a "parlor trick" like that!" Jim wasn't trying to be mean as he said this, but that's what it sounded like as he continued to laugh. "I gotta say, I'm glad I ran into you two after all. You've made a boring day a bit less dull."

"Oh, my cards don't impress you?" Esmeralda put them away. She was directing this at Jim "Although, you're right. My cards are just 'parlor tricks'. However, there are some things that could be trickier." She tied her scarf back on. The flash powder she carried with her was hidden in there. She looked back, pretending there was someone following her. As she whipped back, she had grabbed a pinch of powder disctreetly; but that pinch was just enough to send a shower of sparks to mask her fleeing - well, she really ran to hide somewhere up ahead - as she thrust her hand down.

Kayley frowned when Jim started laughing. "Hey, where we came from, back in the day, stuff like parlor tricks was enough to make people accuse you of being a witch." Heck, you could just look at a neighbor funny and they would call you a witch. Kayley had learned all about the Salem witch trials in school and she had found the whole thing fascinating, even though she doubted real witches were involved. It looked like Esmeralda wasn't quite done yet with her tricks though. She threw something on the ground and Kayley's vision was filled with brightly-colored sparks. By the time she could see right again, Esmeralda was completely gone, as if she had vanished into thin air. "Wow, that is so awesome!" she exclaimed, although she had no idea where Esmeralda was at the moment.

Jim blinked at the bright flash of light that Esmerelda had produced. However, instead of being impressed by this new trick, he only got a cloud of spent powder in his face. It went down his nose and suddenly Jim was sneezing repeatedly, the powder making him send out powerful breaths of fire as he continued to sneeze again and again. Soon, a small bush close by was engulfed in the flames Jim had spewed from his rapid sneezing.

Esmeralda had hidden in the boughs of a small tree. From her perch, she could see Kayley was impressed. Well, no surprise. Kayley's naivety had a sort of charm to it. She was sweet to compliment Esmeralda's "lame" card tricks. Whereas Jim sneezed...and set a bush on fire. Now her curiosity was sparked; no pun intended. Was Jim a pyromancer? He mentioned something about wizards. Nah, safe not to pry. "Gesundeiht," she said as she came back.

Kayley probably would have giggled at Jim's sneezing, if he didn't release a small jet of fire each time. She gave a squeak and hopped backwards to avoid getting scorched. "Jeez, remind me not to be near you when you have a cold," she said. Jim could probably burn a whole forest down at that rate. She finally managed to spot Esmeralda as she came back from her hiding place in a small tree. "Well, at least we have a way of making a quick escape if we need to," she said, smiling.

Jim managed to finally catch his breath and stop his rapid sneezing. However, using so much of his fire had awakened his dragon blood and now he could feel himself trying to take on his dragon form. He looked down at his hands and could see the nails curling into claws as his teeth began to sharpen in his mouth. "Shit!" Jim quickly stuffed his hands in his pockets and clamped his mouth shut tight as he turned towards the girls. He began to back away from them as quickly as possible without them noticing. Even if Esmerelda and Kayley weren't from Orachd, he doubted they would react well to a dragon. What he didn't know was that his eyes had turned from blue-green to red now.

As Esmeralda got closer, she noticed Jim had...well...changed. His nails had charpened to points. One wrong move and someone could be cut to ribbons. In his grimace, his teeth were sharpening to points. And his eyes? No longer blue-green, but a vibrant scarlet. "Uh...Jim? You okay?" Concern came from her voice. "Didn't think my flash powder would give you an allergic reaction."

Kayley turned to look at Jim. "Dude, are you okay?" Of course, as soon as she asked that, Kayley could see that he was definitely not okay. Claws on the ends of his hands instead of fingernails, red eyes, those were probably not good signs. "Um, maybe we should take a...few steps back," she said to Esmeralda, already moving backwards. She had a feeling something was about to happen, and she had no idea if it would be bad or good.

Jim knew they could tell something was wrong with him, but he was determined to try and get away before they saw him completely changed. "Me? Nah, I feel completely...." A loud ripping sound interrupted him as several spikes sprouted from his body and head. Claws ripped through his shoes as golden scales climbed up his skin. With another loud rip, a tail appeared behind him as his face extended slightly. Last of all, the arms on his jacket tore apart, leaving his arms bare up to the shoulder. "Oh shit man! This was my favorite jacket!" Jim looked at the torn remains of what used to be his jacket sleeves.

"Sucks about the jacket," Esmeralda replied. She cringed at the spikes. Didn't those hurt? Even the scales, despite just the climbing up, looked painful. So Jim was part...lizard? No, no, this place was different. He was a half-dragon! Was Esmeralda afraid? Well, concerned would be a better word choice. "Do you...need any help there, man?"

Kayley gave a little shriek of surprise and jumped back when scales, a tail, and spikes suddenly popped up on Jim's body. It didn't take her long to figure out what he actually was. Jim was a dragon! Or, maybe half of one, considering that he looked like a human earlier. "Wow, a real dragon!" she exclaimed happily, thrilled at her new discovery. "This is so cool. Wait 'til my parents hear about this." She bounced up and down excitedly. Dragons had always been one of her favorite mythical creatures. They were so strong and powerful, but graceful too. Although she preferred the stories where they were good guys rather than bad guys.
